The CleanImplant Foundation

Located in the German capital the CleanImplant Foundation CIF GmbH was founded in Berlin in 2016 as a non-for-profit organization. The foundation is committed to scientific and financial transparency. That means all processes of analysis are absolute unbiased, reports for the Trusted Quality Mark are peer-reviewed and even the annual financial report is open to public (find out more here).  CleanImplant regularly initiates objective analysis of the production quality of dental implants, by using independent institutes based on a defined protocol. Research to determine the consequences and clinical relevance of avoidable contamination and quality deficiencies in dental implants, are promoted and commissioned in collaboration with renowned universities.

Voices of the Experts

The legal perspective:
Liability of manufacturers and dentists for impure implants

We speak with Dr. Tobias Witte, Certified Attorney in Medical Law; KWM Münster, Germany, about the legal perspective concerning the problem of contaminated sterile packaged implants. Summary of a lecture at the 2nd CleanImplant Expert Meeting, Europerio 9, Amsterdam, Netherlands, June 20, 2018.

The CleanImplant Scientific Advisory Board

Scientists and key opinion leaders from all over the world support the project with their expertise and experience. The Foundation is proud and honored to present the renown members of the Scientific Advisory Board. In 2017 this group of experts has set the criteria for „clean implants“
in a consensus process. The Board not only performs a thorough peer-review
of comprehensive data of analyses in the "Trusted Quality Mark" awarding process but also controls the scientific outcome and sets the direction
of the CleanImplant Foundation.

“Implant surfaces do influence the biological response, some modifications may strengthen osseointegration others, such as unintentional impurities, may contribute to a clinical failure. Control of the implant properties is therefore very important and all clinician should be able to know what kind of products they purchase.”

“We have to know, not believe, that a specific implant is without harm to our patients.”

“Dentists have to rely on the word of manufacturers and the FDA or CE marks to feel sure that the implants they are using are being manufactured to a standard one would expect of an implantable dental device. Sadly, this is often not the case. The CleanImplant Foundation is an objective, independent non-profit foundation that has been established to fill this void and to help provide both dentist and patient the reassurance they need and must have when using dental implants.”

"We discuss as researchers and clinicians periimplantitis issues and often blame patients, surgeons or prosthodontist for the damage done. Some key opinion makers even suggest a return to ‘good all days’ implants. Indeed periimplantitis was less observed or we we were not aware of it. Maybe the immunologic reaction related to materials and surfaces, whereof some of reputable surface quality, is underestimated as a causal factor. Clean, cleaner, cleanest is maybe not only for the patient selection an issue but also for the implant surface."

“…up to now no quality control exists for dental implants once they have the CE or FDA marks. Therefore I support the idea of the „CleanImplant Foundation“ as an objective, independent, non-profit organization to establish the first quality seal in implant dentistry. Even if we do not know the clinical implications yet, our patients deserve the best quality that is available…“

“Osseointegrated implantology started few decades ago with pure titanium fixtures treated with the best passivation and sterilization protocols available at the time….Nowadays, the major issues related to the quality evaluation of those new types of implants and surfaces are caused by the weak implant approval regulations imposed by legal organisations such as the FDA for the US or European Community (CE label) for their markets. How can it be possible to judge an implant quality, just by using sterilization tests or cell-culture techniques to identify an eventual toxicity of the material?”
